The EF81 300 series, developed for the Kanmon Tunnel connecting Honshu and Kyushu, features a stainless steel body with a unique corrugated exterior. Of these, Units 301 and 302 were painted rose pink (red No. 13), the same color as other general cars, when they were transferred from the Moji engine depot to the Uchigo engine depot due to the timetable revision in October 1978.
